Investigations have shown that the government of the West African nation was aware that Mr. Sawyer was under observation for the disease and they let him come to Nigeria.
As per a Premium Times report, the Liberian government was aware that Patrick
Sawyer (The first Ebola patient who died in Nigeria) had contracted the Ebola virus before flying to Nigeria and yet he was cleared to travel to any country still despite his illness.
Reports shows that Mr. Sawyer’s employers, ArcelorMittal, had suspended him from work in the wake of finding that he had interacted with his sister who died of the deadly Ebola virus.
The organization likewise issued an internal memo to notify notice its employees of the development. It read:
“A family member of an Arcelor Mittal Liberia employee died on Tuesday, July 8th, in Monrovia due to a confirmed case of the Ebola virus,” the July 11 edition of Satellite, an internal newsletter of ArcelorMittal Liberia, said. “The employee had minimal contact with the victim, at the state where the virus was infectious.
“Doctors say the risk of potential transfer to any member of the ArcelorMittal staff or contractors is very low. The employee has submitted to the Ministry of Health for a medical examination for possible Ebola infection, and has also requested the Ministry of Health to make the result available to ArcelorMittal Liberia and its close affiliates.
Notwithstanding, in spite of the way that he was being watched for infection, the Liberian Government, through its Deputy Finance Minister For Fiscal Affairs, Sebastian Muah, cleared Mr. Sawyer to fly out to Nigeria for an ECOWAS gathering in Calabar.
Premium Times reports that the assistant minister personally admitted approving the trip in an online discussion forum, where some Liberian citizens raised questions about his health, activities and fitness.
This report directly contradicts previous claims that Sawyer escaped from isolation in Liberia. Mr. Sawyer was severely ill when he arrived Nigeria and he was rushed to the First Consultant Hospital in Obalende, Lagos where he died of the disease.
All present instances of Ebola spread in Nigeria have been traced to contact with the Liberian-American. Could this be act of terror or a mistake? Innocent people have started dying already from the spread of the disease in Nigeria
