Raymond Dokpesi is seeking to become the PDP national chairman |
Ali Modu Sheriff may not have been sacked as chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because of his desire to contest the presidential election of 2019 as widely believed after all.
He was ousted by the party leadership because of his link with Boko Haram, according to media mogul and politician, Chief Raymond Dokpesi. Dokpesi, who is reportedly gunning for the position of the national chairman of the party, said in Asaba that the party could not keep Sheriff in the position because he is linked with the dreaded terrorist group. While speaking in Asaba, Delta state, according to Daily Post, Dokpesi said: “Sheriff has a little bit of baggage because from where he came from, he is not supported. “Boko Haram is a major reason our son, Goodluck Jonathan lost the last presidential election. “So there was no need for us to bring somebody associated with Boko Haram to represent us if we wish to reclaim the presidency in 2019.” While Sheriff, a former governor of Borno state, was still in the All Progressives Congress, his alleged link with Boko Haram became a major campaign point of the PDP. He left the party and joined the PDP becoming the national chairman after the party lost the 2015 election. His stay was however cut short when he was sent out at a convention of the party. He is still contesting his removal and analysts think this would further injure the party’s move to unite aggrieved factions.
