UMTH decries NEMA, govt’s attitude in taking care of injured Boko Haram victims

The Chairman Medical Advisory Committee of University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, (UMTH), Dr. Mohammed Tahir yesterday blasted the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Borno State Government over their non-challant attitude towards taking care of boko haram victims, particularly the injured ones recieving treatment.

Dr. Tahir said since 2009 to date, UMTH had been treating victims of Boko Haram including security operatives, in which, a total sum of N130 million were spent on drugs and other related medical care, unfortunately, all their pleas for NEMA to assist the hospital failed on deaf ears.
He also expressed sadness over Borno state government through its newly established State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for only donating N10 million used in taking care of the victims by the hospital.
The Chairman made this stunned revelations when the Director General of NEMA, Alhaji Sani Sidi led other NEMA officials and other humanitarian agency staff like the Red Cross on a one -day visit to UMTH to sympathize with insurgency victims currently on admission.
“We are really disappointed with NEMA and SEMA for your refusal to come to the aid of UMTH in treatment of Boko Haram victims, this hospital has been doing its best in treatment of victims of the ongoing crisis since 2009 to date, but all our series of written letters/ memos in respect to financial assistance severally send to you ended up thrown in a dust bin.
“UMTH had in several occasions refused to join other members of their colleagues during strike action, just because of the increasing number of victims being brought/referred to this hospital, unfortunately, NEMA in particular which is the sole federal government agency in managing emergency responses has failed to live up to its expectations”. Dr. Tahir lamented.
Responding, the NEMA DG thanked the management staff of UMTH for their support in taking care of the victims, particularly those on admission, pointing out that, the agency will do everything possible to assist the hospital.
He noted that, although NEMA has a lot of responsibilities in managing the escalating violence and other victims of Boko Haram in the north east and other parts of the country, the agency is in Borno to identify all the problems affecting the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), so that NEMA will take up the 100% responsibility of feeding them, and as well partner with the state government and UMTH assist the injured ones.
He told the Chairman that UMTH should immediately outline all the necessary areas of need, so that NEMA will take up the matter for assisting the hospital as soon as possible. End
