Hundreds of Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly left their hiding cells in Sambisa, Alagarno and other forests in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States due to hunger.
This was disclosed by security sources in Maiduguri yesterday, Daily Trust reports.
According to report, the sect had run out food water, drugs and other basic needs and that is why they are now looting of shops and markets in parts of Yobe and Borno States.
A top security source said the sect was angry and frustrated hence their recent attacks on Maiduguri.
He explained that the attacks were launched to frighten the people, while making use of the opportunity to loot the communities of their food, drugs and animals.
Some of the insurgents arrested in the past three days were said to have confessed that the Nigerian forces and their counterparts from Chad, Cameroon and Niger had blocked their chain of command and broken their routes of supply.
The security source said: “We have arrested some of them who said they would come to town and get arrested than to remain in the bush and die of hunger. We have dismantled most of their camps and bases but we still have a long way to go to completely subdue them. Some of their bases and hiding places are just being identified.”
Meanwhile, a Retired Major and security expert Salihu Bukhari, pointed out denying the sect access to sources of livelihood was the best way to curb insurgency.
Boko Haram fighters at the weekend launched three attacks on Maiduguri and one in Fika, Yobe State. Meanwhile, the death toll from the weekend’s suicide bombing at a mosque in Maiduguri has risen to 26 while over 30 people were injured.
Former president, Goodluck Jonathan’s administration tried to curb the insurgents. In the weeks leading to the 2015 general elections, Nigerian security agents flushed the insurgents from major towns in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.
The sect has however begun launching fresh attacks in this new administration led by Muhammadu Buhari.
