Hospital harvests 23 organs from brain-dead donors

In a remarkable act of humanity, Apollo Hospitals, has harvested 23 organs from five brain dead organ donors even as it carried out 10 transplants in one day at its flagship Hospital in India.
The organs were harvested under the watch of the donors’grieving families, setting a record for first ever maximum number of organs harvested in one day.

The rare gesture of kindness displayed by the five  families who donated the organs of their loved ones gave a fresh lease of life to 23 other people on the same day.
Expressing gratitude, the Founder/Chairman of the Hospitals, Dr. Reddy and Vice Chairperson, Ms. Preetha Reddy, on behalf of the clinical team said: “These well-meaning families have given patients with end-stage organ failure, a second chance to live – and this act will inspire more people to donate organs.
“It takes an extreme sense of human kindness and an elevated sense of social responsibility from families to help hospitals and doctors to give a fresh lease of life to those in need. Human life is priceless, and when an individual’s life can give life and hope to so many others in need, it is truly priceless”
Explaining the life saving procedure, Reddy said a multidisciplinary team of 100 doctors utilised seven state-of –the-art operating theatres simultaneously to harvest 23 organs and carry out 10 transplants at the same time.
Reddy said the doctors and support staff have worked round the clock to help realise this remarkable feat by Apollo Group’s success in running the busiest and most successful transplant centre in the world.
“If only the kindness exhibited by these five families, in donating the organs of their beloved ones, were to be a torch-bearer for others to follow, it will mean that a lot more patients who are in end-stage organ failure and who are in dire need of organs would have a fresh lease of life.
