The Nigeria Academy of Science on Tuesday said that disease surveillance was very important for the diagnosis, prevention and control of diseases in healthcare delivery.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos, the President of NAS, Prof. Oyewale Tomori, said that the recent Ebola control in Nigeria was a clear evidence.
“The recent control of Ebola in Nigeria provides lessons on how we can strengthen the health system in Nigeria.
“We succeeded in controlling the outbreak through an alert and reliable disease surveillance system,” Tomori said.
According to the NAS president, the country needs an efficient diagnostic laboratories that will be accessible to all states and local government areas.
Tomori said definition and adherence to roles among the various tiers of government (federal, state and local government) in healthcare delivery could strengthen the health system.
“The constitution says health is on the concurrent list, but it also defines the roles for the federal, state and local governments.
“Each tier of government must be held accountable for its constitutional role,” the NAS president said.
He said there was need for collaboration with a spirit of mutual respect and recognition of the various professionals in the health system.
He advocated for a form of standard in all institutions for infection control procedures at every level of the healthcare delivery system.
Tomori said the provision of appropriate funds and resources (human, material, infrastructure) for efficient operation of healthcare facilities would also strengthen the health system.
NAN reports that the academy has been operating as a voluntary organisation but collaborating with the government in the growth and development of science and technology in Nigeria.
