Enugu residents are still shocked following an explosion at the national headquarters of the Igbo apex body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and No 7 Parks Avenue GRA Enugu on Saturday. The blast destroyed some parts of the building and equipment.
The explosion, which led to a fire outbreak that was put out, affected the main hall of the secretariat, where major meetings of the Igbo body are held. No life was lost, but sources reported that the blast shook the entire vicinity.
The blast is coming on the heels of a recent leadership crisis, which has pitted Chief Gary Enwo-Igariwey-led leadership against the Elders’ Council led by elder statesman, Mbazuluike Amechi.
While the executive is claiming a four-year tenure, the elders’ council has constituted a caretaker committee led by Chief Ralph Obioha, insisting that the two-year tenure of the executive expired on January 7, 2015.
Obioha, who inspected the Ohanaeze main hall affected by the blast, told our reporter yesterday that it was an unfortunate incident.
Said he: “I have inspected the place. It’s quite an extensive damage. I can’t guess the motive or why such an attack should be targeted at Ohanaeze. It’s a mystery and I condemn it in its entirety. It’s actually a bomb issue, but the motive cannot be explained.”
Also commenting, the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Dr. Joe Nworgu, said: “I don’t know the choice of that target whatsoever. It happened at about 8:45pm; I was alerted at about 8:55pm. It’s unfortunate.”
The Enugu State police command’s spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu, said the explosion was not a bomb, but an attempt by unknown persons to raze the building.
He said the police are investigating.
