A’Ibom roads: FERMA receives presidential order

The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency said on Monday that contractors had commenced work on the Ikot Ekpene-Umuahia and Aba-Ikot Ekpene-Itu roads, which link Akwa Ibom State with other states of the federation.
The board member of the agency representing
South-South Zone, Commodore Idongesit Nkanga (retd.), said that a presidential directive had been issued to FERMA to make the roads that link Akwa Ibom with other states accessible.
Nkanga, who said this during a press conference in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, lamented that the state had been completely locked out from other states due to poor conditions of the roads surrounding the state.
He said travellers coming to Akwa Ibom had been accessing the state through Port Harcourt in Rivers State while others passed through Ebonyi to Cross River State before coming into Akwa Ibom. He added that the routes to Akwa Ibom from Umuahia and Aba (both in Abia State) had completely collapsed.
He said, “You will observe that Akwa Ibom State has literarily been locked out from the rest of Nigerian states because of the poor conditions of roads beyond the state. The roads within the state are all right but those that link the state with others are impassable.
“If you wish to go to a place, just beyond Obot Akara in Akwa Ibom, you have to go to Port Harcourt and start heading to the Federal Highway in Aba or Umuahia before you come to Akwa Ibom. Alternatively, you can also access Akwa Ibom through Ebonyi to Cross River.”
