ABUJA—A group of trained ex-militants have threatened to shut down the operation of Shell and its affiliates in 10 communities of the Niger Delta hosting Southern Swamp Associated Gas Solution Plus Project, SSAGS,if it failed within the shortest possible time to live up to its social corporate responsibility.
The group accused the oil giant of not only empowering youths outside the 10 communities but also engaging contractors and workers from other areas at their detriment.
A statement released yesterday, in Abuja, and signed by Mr. Tissa Ebiotukebena, commander of ex-militants from the host communities of the Southern Swamp Associated Gas Solutions Plus, Mr. Teitei Timipamoweia and Keke Angulu, both chairman and secretary of the group respectively, asked President Goodluck Jonathan, Governors Seriake Dickson and Emmanuel Uduaghan of Bayelsa and Delta states to call the oil firm to order.
The statement read: “We wish to draw your attention to the looming communal crises deliberately caused by Shell in Egbemo-Angalbiri, Agbidiama, Ogbotobo, Agbayama, Peretorugbene, Tamogbene, Norgbene, Amabolou, Oweigbene and Ojobo communities which are the host communities to the Southern Swamp Associated Gas Solution Plus Project, SSAGS.
“The SSAGS project is one that has a lot of potential to empower host indigenes and benefit the above named communities collectively short and long term if contracts, socio-economic and environmental responsibilities are handled with transparency.”
