Oshiomhole wades into Oredo council crisis; new Leader sworn in

BENIN— FOLLOWING the intervention of Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State in the crisis rocking the legislative arm of Oredo Local Government Area, the new Leader of the House, Mr. Nohayi Obaseki, was sworn-in yesterday.
Suspected thugs had invaded the
council secretariat, Wednesday, following rumours that the councillors were set to impeach the chairman of the council, Mr. Osaro Obaze.
Obaze, who reacted to the situation on Wednesday, urged the councillors to follow due process, adding that he decided to remain neutral in the matter since it was entirely an affair of the legislative arm of government.
However, Governor Oshiomhole summoned the warring parties, where he urged the former Leader to toe the line of peace since majority of the councillors had moved against him.
The governor was said to have pointed out to the former Leader that he should have pleaded with his colleagues to allow him resign his position when he noticed that majority were already against him rather than allow them to impeach him.
He advised that the new Leader be sworn in and urged him to ensure unity and peace in the council.
Reacting shortly after his swearing in, Obaseki dismissed report that they intended to impeach the Chairman, saying “my duty is to carry my people along and I bear no grudge against anybody.
“I am going to work with the former leadership because we are all friends and brothers. I want to state categorically that it is not true that we want to impeach the Chairman.”
