The national women leader of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Mrs. Amaka Agbiogwu, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to include more women in political positions in line with the 35% affirmation for women in politics.
Agbiogwu, who spoke exclusively in Awka, said the 35% affirmation had not been fully implemented by previous government.
She urged the present administration to give the women folk a sense of belonging in the country by implementing it.
“The number of women in political positions both at the federal and state levels is very infinitesimal and we are pleading with our dear President to carry the women along, considering the fact that women in Nigeria form majority of the electorate that vote in every election,” Agbiogwu said.
She advised women to participate actively in politics, noting that history had shown that women in public and political offices had performed even better than their male counterparts.
Agbiogwu appealed to the menfolk to allow their wives to get involved in politics so as to contribute their quota to the development of the country.
“Some men do not allow their wives to participate in politics because they erroneously believe that their wives once in politics would no longer perform their duty as a wife.
‘’But that is not true. The time has gone when the position of women was in the kitchen and that does not mean that if a women is politics she would shirk her responsibility as wife and mother,” she said.
She, however, noted that the problem facing women in politics was that of economic empowerment that had limited them from favourable competition with their male counterparts.
She added: “Our major problem is economic empowerment. As a woman, if you do not have money you can not contest and win any election in this country.
