Ekiti Lawmakers Insist On Fayose's Impeachment

The crisis in Ekiti state has continued to escalate as lawmakers press for the impeachment of Governor Ayodele Fayose, with just two days to go.

The standoff has continued to raise tension within the legislative and executive arm of the state government and has slowed down the pace of administration of the state. It is reported that 19 All Progressives Congress (APC) legislators in a dramatic turn rekindled the move to impeach Fayose.

Speaking with Channels Television, Fayose, who is to inaugurate the 5th Assembly of Ekiti State on Friday 5  June, in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, described the situation “as a very dangerous trend”.

He said that he had met with the aggrieved lawmakers and afterwards settled their grievances. “After the meeting, they told me to pay them so they can go peacefully; as a leader I did and I am only concerned about the life and property of people in Ekiti state”.

Meanwhile, an APC chieftain in the state Funminiyi Adefuye denied that the legislators had received any payment. In his words, “None of our members have received any cheque of payment from the Governor.”
There have been calls from many quarters for President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the Ekiti state crisis.

According to PM news, Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa state while addressing newsmen after a three-day workshop with PDP stalwarts expressed dissatisfaction with the situation.
He said, “Democracy has come to stay in the country as nurtured under the PDP leadership of the former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan for 16 years and should not be jeopardized as a result of the nature of politics played in some states in the federation”.

The acting chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Uche Secondus, described the situation in Ekiti as “unfortunate” and said that the lawmakers cannot impeach the governor without serving him an impeachment notice. He called for peace within the state.

Meanwhile, it is reported that Fayose has maintained that he has paid all lawmakers in Ekiti state their outstanding allowances.
