Dame Angelina: Jolie is presented with the Insignia of an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George by Queen Elizabeth II in the 1844 Room at Buckingham Palace, London, on October 10 2014

As the multi-faceted actress turns 40, we celebrate the twists and turns her career has taken

1. Makes her film debut (1980)

Aged six, Angelina Jolie starred in Hal Ashby's Lookin' to Get Out, which was co-written and co-produced by her father, Jon Voight.

2. Marries Jonny Lee Miller in a bloody shirt (1996)

"In March Ms Jolie married the English actor Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting), whom she met on the set of Hackers. The wedding, a small civil ceremony attended only by her mother and Mr Miller's best friend, was a testament to Ms Jolie's offbeat approach to life.
Mr Miller wore black leather, while the bride donned black rubber pants and a white shirt with the groom's name written in her blood across the back. Why, you ask? 'It's your husband,' she answers with a sly grin. 'You're about to marry him. You can sacrifice a little to make it really special.' (She drew the blood herself, 'very carefully,' she says 'with a clean surgical needle.')" - The New York Times.

3. Gia (1998)

Jolie won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of the model Gia Carangi, who died of HIV after using an infected needle to inject heroin.

4. Girl Interrupted (1999)

5. On self-harm and being a role model (2000)

"This person asked me about cutting myself when they saw a scar," she told Jane magazine. "I'm very open, but because of that, people think that they know everything about me, and actually they don't know anything. I say things that other people might go through. That's what artists should do - throw things out there and not be perfect and not have answers for anything and see if people understand.
"But this person made the cutting sound interesting, like it was something I do now. And then I met somebody who said they'd seem movies of mine and then showed me where they had cut themselves. I had to explain, first off, not to do that. But I make me really f------ angry at the people who represent me in a way that would get that person to do that and show me. I don't understand why people would want to use something so damaging. It's like, let's make me look 'cool' and worry a lot of people in my family."

6. Her Oscar speech for Girl Interrupted (2000)

After the ceremony, she scandalised onlookers by passionately kissing her brother, actor James Haven, and telling the world, “I’m so in love with him”. Haven, for his part, is an unmarried, born-again Christian. He said: “Because I’m so close to Angie, it’s like I’ve already got the perfect woman in my life, and it’s hard for anyone else to live up to that.”

7. Wears dreadlocks for Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)

8. Makes her first visit to refugee camps in Sierra Leone (2001)

“I realised how completely naive I was to think I had a difficult life. It was as if someone slapped me across the face and said, 'Oh, my God, you silly young woman from California, do you have any idea how difficult the world really is for so many people?’ ”

9. Nominated for Worst Actress at the Razzies (2001-2005)

Jolie was nominated across four consecutive years for her work in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Original Sin, Life or Something Like It, Beyond Borders, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, Alexander and Taking Lives.
She was "beaten" by Mariah Carey, Madonna and Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Halle Berry.

10. Adopts her first child, Maddox (2002)

In 2003, Jolie told Rolling Stone: "My life belongs to him. That thing I used to have when something would go wrong, that place of self-destruction or addiction or craziness, when you have a child you can't afford that and you just don't. When your world falls apart or you're feeling really depressed, you pick yourself up and smile so they don't worry."

11. Legally changes her name from Voight to Jolie (2002)

Jolie and her brother were estranged from their father for a number of years, during which time they both adopted their middle names as surnames.
A year after appearing with her father in Tomb Raider, Jolie legally changed to her stage name.

12. Drugs (2003)

“I have done just about every drug possible,” she told the Sunday Times. “Cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, LSD. The worst effect, oddly enough, was pot, which made me feel out of control, and I became silly and giggly. I liked LSD for a while, until I went to Disneyland and started thinking about Mickey Mouse being a short, middle-aged man in a costume who hates his life. My brain went the other way and I started thinking, ‘Look at these fake flowers, the kids are on leashes, the parents hate being here.’ Those drugs can be dangerous. I know friends who are no longer happy or interesting, living for junk all the time and using people.”

13. Tells Barbara Walters about using knives in sex (2003)

"I was self-destructive, always. I didn't feel close enough to another person. I didn't feel alive enough. Early on in my first sexual relationship, I got knives out and had a night where we attacked each other.
"It was so stupid because I still have a mark next to my jugular vein. But it was a release of some kind. It felt so primitive, and so honest. And then I had to feal with no telling my mother, and hiding the gauze bandage that I wore to high school."

14. Wears husband Billy Bob Thornton's blood in a "vial" around her neck (2003)

Billy Bob comes clean: "Vial of blood is very simple. You know those lockets you buy that are clear and you put a picture of your grannie in and wear it around your neck? She bought two of those. We were apart a lot because she's off making Tomb Raider and I'm making Monster's Ball.
"She thought it would be interesting and romantic if we took a little razor blade and sliced our fingers, smeared a little blood on these lockets and you wear it around your neck just like you wear your son or daughter's baby hair in one. Same thing. From that, we were wearing quart jars of blood around our necks. And we were vampires and we lived in a dungeon."

15. 'Brangelina' is born (2005)

Despite his being married to Friends actress Jennifer Aniston at the time, Brad Pitt and Jolie fell in love on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith, the comedy thriller about married spies..
Aniston spent 10 years being pitied by the press, but hopefully that can finally be put to rest.

16. Adopts Zahara from Ethiopia (2005)

A few months into her relationship with Pitt, Jolie adopted her second child, Zahara Marley Pitt, a newborn girl who had been orphaned by AIDS.
"Maddox and I are very happy to have a new addition to our family," Jolie said.

The couple sell the first pictures of Shiloh through an image distributor, to foil the paparazzi, in exchange for UNICEF donations worth nearly $8 million.

18. Adopts three-year-old Pax Thien from Vietnam (2007)

Pax is Latin for peace; Thien traditionally means sky in Vietnamese. Vietnamese law does not allow unmarried couples to adopt, so Jolie adopted Pax as a single parents, with Pitt filming The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in the US.

19. Is the subject of 'the worst celebrity profile ever written' (2007)

The otherwise respected writer Tom Junod wrote a piece on Jolie for the men's magazine Esquire. It was widely panned for appearing to suck up to the actress, with the American website Slate dedicating an entire column to its faults.
"In post-9/11 America, Angelina Jolie is the best woman in the world because she is the most famous woman in the world—because she is not like you or me" was a line that drew particular opprobrium.

20. Turns to the wine trade (2008)

Pitt and Jolie took out a lease on Château Miraval in the south of France, a castle with accompanying vineyards with a line in very famous rosé.
The wine, Pink Floyd, is named after the band who recorded tracks for their album The Wall at the castle's recording studio in the late Seventies.
Jolie gave birth to their twins there the same year, and later bought the castle, where they married in 2014.

21. Wanted (2008)

22. Becomes the highest-earning actress in Hollywood (2008)

She toppled Reese Witherspoon from the number one spot after a good year that saw her earn $15 million for Wanted.

27. Her leg goes viral (2012)

After striking a pose on the red carpet before the Oscars, where she was presenting the award for Best Adapted Screenplay, Jolie went viral. Or more accurately, her right leg did.
A Twitter account, Angie'sRightLeg, gained more than 40,000 followers, and her pose inspired a flurry of Photoshopped images of unlikely candidates in the pose.

28. Receives the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award (2013)

29. Writes a New York Times op-ed about having a preventative double mastectomy (2013)

Then aged 37, Jolie said that she has a faulty gene making her much more likely to suffer from breast or ovarian cancer.
“I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy," she wrote.
“But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 per cent to under 5 per cent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer. It is reassuring that they see nothing that makes them uncomfortable."

30. Teams up with William Hague (2014)

The pair co-hosted a global conference in London in June on preventing rape being used a tactic in war.
The initiative was partly inspired by Jolie's film In the Land of Blood and Honey, which dealt with sexual violence inflicted on a woman during Bosnia's 1992-95 war.

31. On not wanting to watch her own films (2014)

34. Officially becomes one of the most likeable stars in Hollywood (2014)

"According to US pollster Q Scores, which determines celebrities’ likeability factor, Jolie’s score is 23 – meaning 23 per cent of US adults consider her 'one of [their] favourite personalities', while 85 per cent of adults know who she is. This compared with a 15 per cent likeability score and 46 per cent awareness for the average actress. Many of her films have performed poorly at the box office (though her latest, Maleficent, has earned $140 million in just three weeks), yet Jolie is considered one of the few female stars who can “carry” a film, and is estimated to be Hollywood’s highest-paid actress, earning $33 million last year." Julia Llewellyn-Smith, The remarkable reinvention of Angelina Jolie

35. Hints at an imminent retirement from acting (2014)

“I’ve never been comfortable as an actor; I’ve never loved being in front of the camera. I didn’t ever think I could direct, but I hope I’m able to have a career at it because I’m much happier.”
Asked if she intended to give up acting entirely, she replied: "Absolutely".

36. Gives the cold shoulder to then Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal following leaked emails (2014)

It was the kind of steely, withering glare that wins Oscars and Jolie delivered it with aplomb. Two days after she was dismissed in leaked Sony emails as a"minimally talented spoiled brat" the actress bumped into studio chief Amy Pascal, one of those involved in the chain of unflattering messages.

37. Supports her child's decision to be called John (2014)

Angelina Jolie’s eight-year-old daughter no longer wants to be known as Shiloh – she’d rather be called John. Pitt, disclosed in an interview that when he would call her "Shi", she’d interrupt him saying, "I’m John".
"Now the whole family address her as John (so we will too), and at Jolie's Unbroken film premiere, she wore a suit and tie to match her older brothers Pax and Maddox. Her tomboy tendencies have clearly been going on for a while." - Radhika Sanghani, Angelina Jolie's daughter 'wants to be called John'. How should parents react to children questioning gender roles?

40. Rumoured to direct Captain Marvel (2015)

Marvel has been beset with problems over its treatment of its female characters and properties. Jolie could be the studio's first female director, taking the lead on 2018's Captain Marvel, about Carol Danver, a human woman who receives powers from an alien empire.
