Former governor of Kwara State, Senator Bukola Abubakar Saraki has been elected as the 8th Senate President of Nigeria.

In April 2011, after serving two-terms as the governor of Kwara State, Saraki ran for the office of Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing the Kwara Central Senatorial District and won.

The new Senate President is currently a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and a former member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

1. He was endorsed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators and backed by minority senators of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Meanwhile the tussle for the leadership of the National Assembly has thrown open the question that, was Saraki’s initial defection to the APC authentic or just for survival because the opposition party decided to adopt him as their candidate just before the election.
