Even though we are in the year 2015, as usual in the Nigerian political firmament, permutations and alignments have started for the race to the 2019 presidential contest.
The race is more open now because of the rumours that President Muhammadu Buhari might not re-contest for the office in four years time.
Reports say the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is already preparing for the 2019 contest by zoning its presidential ticket to the North-east or North-central and its vice-presidential ticket to the South-East. As many names spring up in the polity over which politician might clinch the ticket in the South-east, Naij.com profiles four heavy-weight politicians that might get the party’s nod in 2019.
Read below:
1. Senator Ike Ekweremadu: The newly returned deputy senate president is perharps the biggest politician form the south-east today by virtue of his position. An accomplished lawyer, Ekweremadu is the rallying point for his colleagues in the PDP in the upper chamber and his position puts him in a good stead to clinch the ticket in 2019.

2. Peter Obi: The former governor of Anambra state and the current chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is not only a huge political figure in the south east, he is also a corporate titan. An astute manager, Obi left no debt for his successor, Willie Obiano, after 8 years in the saddle in his home state. His competence is not in doubt as he proven himself to be a trust-worthy public servant.

3.Emeka Ihedioha: The immediate past deputy speaker of the house of representatives is another political heavyweight from the east. His political experience started when he joined the popular Peoples Democratic Movement decades ago. He was their publicity secretary and the group later metamorphosed into the PDP. The influential political pressure group has produced heavyweights across the nation like former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Ihedioha’s candidacy will no doubt be accepted across the nation because of his vast political connections across all geopolitical zones of the country.

Although he stands an outside chance in the race, he might spring up as a consensus candidate. Chidoka, who graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1995 with a degree in Management has been in public service for most of his working life. His experience also puts him in good stead for the job. His performance as the minister of aviation under Goodluck Jonathan even though brief was also comfortable. |
