US court insists Kashamu should be extradited. |
The United States Department of Justice is “fully ready to assist” Nigeria to extradite Buruji Kashamu and make him face drug trafficking charges in American court.
US District Judge in Chicago Charles Richard Norgle told press the Justice Department is “fully ready to ensure that an express hearing is given” as soon as Kashamu is brought to the US to face drug trafficking charges.
The US Department of Justice representatives assured press that all the needed legal steps to “expressly and legally extradite Buruji Kashamu” have been taken recently.
Despite claims from Buruji Kashamu that he has never even stepped on American soil, the extensive evidence base gathered by American law enforcement agencies leaves very little chances for Kashamu to prove his innocence.
According to Judge Richard Norgle, Kashamu stole his deceased brother Adewale Kashamu identity to get a Nigerian passport and used this document to smuggle drugs from Nigeria and Benin to the US. Mr. Norgle also claims that Kashamu used nicknames Alhaji, Kasmal and Daddy for his shady drug trafficking deals in Chicago.
Kashamu was arrested in the UK in 1998 and held in prison for five years but was released due to inability of British judges to prove that Buruji Kashamu is the same person as Adewale Kashamu, who was wanted in the US court under this name.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on May 24 told Buruji Kashamu to get prepared for extradition proceedings.
The NDLEA laid siege on the residence of Kashamu, previously indicted for drug dealing in the USA. The aides of the senator-elect characterized the move as illegal, to which the Agency, however, objected.
Senator-elect is insisting that the officials didn’t have a warrant of arrest in line with the extradition pact, which they should produce to him.
