A 30-year-old labourer, Ebo Ikechukwu has been arrested and charged to court for allegedly beating two policemen, Ebute Bernard and Haruna Kayode to a pulp at Amore Street, Olodi-Apapa, Lagos.
According to The Nation report, Ikechukwu was caught by the police officers roaming the street at about 1 a.m. and was questioned.
He however could not give them any reason why he was out that late at night and they tried to arrest him.
The accused tried to resist arrest and became violent. He beat up the policemen and damaged the windscreen of a bus valued at N 30,000 belonging to one Mr Bamidele Muyideen.
Ikechukwu was arraigned before Apapa magistrate’s court in Lagos on May 27, Thursday, on a two-count charge of assault and unlawful damage.
The prosecuting corporal, John Iberedem told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 14.
When the charges were read to him, the accused pleaded not guilty.
He was granted bail in the sum N50, 000 with two sureties in the like sum by the senior magistrate G.L. Otepo. The case was adjourned till June 20.
Policemen always seem to landing in trouble as some civilians do not like them and pounce on them at every given opportunity. Sometime back, a commercial bus driver named, Idowu Arisekola, his conductor and some touts beat up a policeman attached to the Ijaiye Ojokoro police station in Lagos state.
In another scenario, some aggrieved workers beat up an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
