Gunmen have shot dead two persons in Abonnem a town, in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The victims, who were identified as Mr. Ibima Olunta, and Goodfellow Bobmanuel, were shot dead Saturday night, by unidentified assailants.
In a swift reaction, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) state chapter had identified the victims as its members, accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC), of carrying out the operation.
State PDP Chairman, Felix Obuah, in a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Jerry Needam, stated that Olunta was the chairman Ward 2 Abonnema while Bobmanuel, was a PDP councillorship aspirant, ward 2 in the Local Government Area.
The PDP said: “They were shot dead as they sat in front of their houses in Abonnema, Ward 2, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area.”
Reacting to the sad incident, Obuah condemned the murder of the PDP chieftains in the area and called for the arrest and prosecution of the people behind the dastardly act.
Obuah expressed concern over what he called a “reign of terror against PDP members by the APC in the state.”
Obuah regretted that governance in the state had collapsed under the present administration, alleging that APC members were in possession of arms.
When the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ahmad Muhammad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was contacted, he confirmed the death of one person, and another injured.
