Acting Governor of Adamawa State, Alhaji Ahmadu Fintiri, yesterday commended the Armed Forces for their efforts to curtail the activities of insurgents in the Northern Senatorial District of the state.
Fintiri made the commendation when he visited the son of former President, Olusegun, Obasanjo, Lt. Col Adeboye Obasanjo, who is recuperating at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) from wounds he sustained in a battle to repel the Boko Haram fighters in Bazza.
The governor said Adamawa natives were proud of the soldiers who had lost their lives while defending the country against insurgents, describing their efforts as a high degree of patriotism.
Adeboye was wounded during a gun duel between the insurgents and troops in Michika in Northern Senatorial District of Adamawa State on Monday.
“The son of the former Nigerian leader, a soldier, was shot on Monday when hundreds of insurgents had a fierce encounter with Nigerian soldiers deployed to Michika with the intention of disorganising the insurgents or dislodging them,” a source said
The source added: “The soldiers have in fact being trying their best, but can be complemented with enough equipment to be able to counter the Boko Haram fighters. There were hours of gun battle, which resulted in the death of some soldiers, while others, including the son of the Nigerian leader, were fiercely wounded.”
As at the time of filing this report, refugees, who have defied the curfew in the area, have continued to troop into Yola, the state capital as well as other towns after the clashes in Mubi and other towns close to Michika, Gulak and Madagali.
Attempts made to reach the Army Public Relations Officer of 23 Armoured Brigade in Yola, Captain Jafaru Nuhu, were abortive.
Boko Hram had recently seized Madagali, Gulak and Michika towns in northern part of Adamawa State, which shares border with Borno State.
