A protester filmed the moment that one of the suspected shooters was spotted on a rooftop as police scoured the area in response to the deadly coordinated attacks.
Footage shows a spotlight searching the dark upper section of a building when an armed figure is spotted.
The video uploaded to Instagram appears to show the shooter being discovered before those watching on make a dash for cover behind a wall so they are out of sight of the shooter.
Police have said the attack that left five police officers dead and six others injured came from two snipers in elevated positions overlooking as protesters marched through Dallas after the fatal shooting of two black men by police officers earlier this week.
Dallas police have three suspects in custody while another suspect who was involved in a tense standoff with officers is now dead, according to multiple local media sources.
One police officer said the suspect told them "the end is coming", after warning they had planted bombs "all over" the city.
Homeland security are on the scene while police carry out an "intensive search" of the area for other potential suspects.
A bomb squad unit is investigating a suspicious package found near one of the suspects' location.
Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings described the event as "our worst nightmare".
He said: "It is a heartbreaking moment to lose these four [now five] officers who served our citizens."
Barack Obama is currently in Poland for a NATO summit but is being kept updated on the shooting.
