The popular notion that Lagos is a no-man’s land has been challenged by a group of Yoruba youths under the aegis of pan-Yoruba National Alliance,(PAYNA) warning non-indigenes must respect the culture of the Yoruba’s people.
The group which is drawn from youths from Oodua Nationalist Coalition, Oodua Peoples Congress and Liberation Movement, frowned why Igbo group in Lagos would present a seven-point agenda before Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, requesting that he appoints some Igbo in his government.
The youths took to the street yesterday to protest against any attempt to marginalize the Yoruba in Lagos pointing out that such move would be met with stiff opposition.
The group leader, Mr. Araoye Akinwunmi, stated, “This is a symbolic rally to warn against the assault on Yoruba heritage. We are sick of people who trample on our heritage even though they make their millions on our territory. The Yoruba will no longer accept the conscious attempt to turn us into slaves on our own land.”
Even as another leader of PANYA, Mr. Martins Adeleke, warned that more protest would follow should those that he called non-indigenes refuse to respect the Yoruba’s culture and heritage, adding that “Our actions will be determined by the proportional response to our demand that if you are living in Rome, you must respect the Pope. If you are living in Yoruba land, you must show respect to our age-long values and our cherished heritage.”
Martins further stressed that some Igbo companies have launched what he termed as a “reciprocal campaign” against Yoruba employees even companies located in Yoruba territory.
He added that the Igbo have taken the war to global stage by launching attacks on Yoruba in Diaspora because they supported speech reportedly credited to the Oba Akiolu that anyone that failed to support his candidate in thge just concluded election would be consumed by the goddess of the sea.
It will be recalled that the Oba of Lagos summoned Igbo leader to his palace during the build up to the last governorship poll.
