In a statement released by the US Department of State on Wednesday, May 28, legendary Nigerian-American ex-basketballer, Akeem Olajuwon will be present at the Eagles Square, Abuja ahead of President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari’s inauguration tomorrow.
According to the US Department, Olajuwon will be attending the handover ceremony as part of the US delegation, to be led by Secretary of State, John Kerry.
Other US delegates are its ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle; Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield and General David M. Rodriguez, Commander, US Africa Command (USAFRICOM), among other. The group is due to arrive Friday.
There has been high international interest in Nigeria’s political transition and the planned transfer of power from the Jonathan-Sambo presidency to the Buhari-Osinbajo presidency.
Meanwhile, Olajuwon, nicknamed ‘The Dream’ had an outstanding basketball career in the United States, where he played for the Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors, among others.
He is also an inductee of Basketball Hall of Fame.
