Authorities of Tansian University, Oba/Umunya in Anambra State have reaffirmed their zero tolerance for cultism, immorality, vandalism, drunkenness, hooliganism and other social vices on campus.
Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Chima Iwuchukwu, who stated this during eighth Matriculation Ceremony of 201 students, also reminded the students that indecent dressing and other forms of shameful behaviour remained outlawed in the institution, adding that the students’ handbook should educate them fully on these and other matters.
He pointed out that a balance between academic achievement and moral development was a highly desirable condition for a graduate of the institution to be found worthy both in character and learning.
Stating that the university was striving to impart knowledge for global competitiveness and wealth creation, Iwuchukwu said that it was for these seasons that the units for entrepreneurial studies, religious practices as well as social engagements of the university were available for the students to develop into well groomed individuals, who would competitively thrive successfully under any circumstance they might find themselves in future.
On its current status, Iwuchukwu noted that as at now, the institution was firmly on the ground and running two major faculties, including those of natural and applied sciences and management and social sciences, adding that all the programmes in the two faculties were accredited by the National Universities Commission, NUC.
He also said that the Faculty of Education, with 12 programmes would start academic operations before long, adding, “it is our hope and assurance that in this new dawn, the number of candidates applying to study in this university will be on the increase.”
He disclosed that the institution’s Information and Communication Technology, ICT, study centre, at the permanent site, Umunya, was a world class outfit for engagement in ICT, even as the authorities were preparing to establish detailed facilities for JAMB/UME computer based tests, CBTs, system, not only for external but internal examinations.
He expressed gratitude to the founder and chancellor of the institution, Monsignor John Akam for being faithful and relentlessly aiming at perfecting the establishment of the ICT and CBT systems.
On it infrastructure developments, it was noted that many structures like the spacious hostels, libraries, lecture halls, and theatres and the relevant administrative blocks were fast springing up at the permanent site, adding that recreational and games facilities such as malls and plazas had already been approved in anticipation of the new dawn.
In his speech, the Founder and Chancellor of the institution, Monsignor Akam, expressed satisfaction that the vision, mission, philosophy and objectives of the institution were gradually being accomplished as most of their former students who had graduated in flying colours and left the institution were now occupying various strategic positions of authority both in and outside the country.
Akam, however, blamed the various governments for neglecting private universities in the country, contrary to what was obtained in foreign countries where government funded both private and public universities at the same time because it is to the credit of the government of the day to have private universities that would take care of the growing population of youths in such a country.
