The World Bank has spent at least $380 million, about N75.24 billion on development of agriculture in the last eight years in Lagos and some other states.
A breakdown of the figure shows that $180 million was spent on Commercial Agriculture Development Project (CADP), while $200 million was spent on National Fadama Development Project (FADAMA).
Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Prince Gbolahan Lawal, who disclosed this at the 2015 ministerial briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, yesterday, said the $200 million Fadama grant was accessed by six states while the $180 million was accessed by five states including Lagos.
Lawal said as a result of performance of Lagos State in the World Bank-assisted project, the state had been selected among six others to benefit from the $25 million grant from the World Bank through the Federal Government for 2015.
The commissioner explained that about 3,000 birds were killed during the recent outbreak of bird flu in the state adding that about 2,000 birds were killed in one farm, 500 birds each in two other famers and 10 birds in a zoo on the Lekki axis even as he stressed that that “there is currently no incident of bird flu in Lagos State.”
He said that “At the end of 2014, our internal production has been 10 percent which is an increase of 7 percent from three percent in Pre-2007, the target of Lagos is to hit 25 percent by 2018.
“The asset base of cooperative societies in Lagos state is now N60 billion and there are about 6, 500 cooperative societies in Lagos out of which only 2, 700 have been revalidated and confirmed active.”
