Impeachment: Nasarawa lawmaker attacked
ON
For an attempt to snatch the mace, a member of Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Tanko Tunga (APC, Awe North) was yesterday thoroughly beaten by his colleagues. He nearly lost his life.
The incident occurred when the lawmakers returned from Abuja to commence the impeachment process of Governor Tanko Al-Makura over alleged gross misconduct and mismanagement of state’s fund when the All Progressives Congress (APC) legislator attempted to snatch the mace, saying the sitting was illegal. He was beaten black and blue by his colleagues, even as his colleagues went ahead to direct the state Chief Judge, Justice Suleiman Umaru, to constitute a seven-member committee to investigate the allegations against the governor.
When contacted, Hon. Tunga said since he was born, he had never received such beating and had no regret for his action.
Meanwhile, the governor has not been served the impeachment notice from the Assembly. His Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Abdulhameed Kwarra, who stated this in a statement in Lafia, said the people would resist any attempt by the House to remove Al-Makura. As “a legislative institution, the House cannot arrogate to itself any judicial power, it is our opinion that only a court of law can grant a relief for substituted service to be served on any party”.
