2 die as Customs, smugglers clash in Ilorin
Two people were killed yesterday in Ilorin, when men of the Nigeria Customs Service and smugglers engaged in a gun duel.Daily Sun investigations revealed that the Customs men were on the trail of a vehicle suspected to be conveying smuggled cosmetic products into the city, which had resisted arrest.
Consequently, the driver of the vehicle was chased to Sawmill area of the Kwara State capital where the customs personnel engaged the fleeing smugglers in a gun fight.
It was gathered that in the pandemonium that ensued for several hours, two people were killed by stray bullets.
According to an eyewitness account, the Customs officials allegedly opened fire on the escaping smugglers, killong two of them.
But in a swift reaction, motor dealers mobilised themselves and were heading towards the Customs House along Yidi Road when men of the Kwara State Police Command stopped them.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Okasanmi Ajayi, said only one person died and that the corpse had since been taken to the morgue.
The PPRO, who said no arrest had been made, also said policemen had cordoned off the area, adding that normalcy had returned to the area.
